Can a real RPG fit on a phone? Mostly, yes
For a long time mobile RPGs meant watered-down versions of the real thing. That's changed. Some of the best turn-based experiences I've had this year were on a phone, on my couch, in short bursts.
The turn-based structure is the secret. It survives interruptions. You can put the phone down mid-battle, answer a message, and pick right back up. That's a natural fit for how we actually play on mobile.
The one lingering annoyance is the energy system, where the game limits how much you can do in a sitting. I understand why they exist, but the best games make the limits generous enough that story-focused players rarely hit the wall.
If you've been skeptical about the genre on mobile, this is a good time to give it another try. Look for deep skill trees, decent writing, and a control scheme that doesn't make grid movement a chore.
