We test everything on an older phone too, and nothing exposes a game like a fading battery. Over dozens of reviews I started noticing which genres run cool and which turn your phone into a hand warmer.

Strategy and adventure games are usually the gentlest. They tend to lean on clean interfaces and static scenes rather than constant particle effects. Something like a hex-map tactics game can run for an hour without much of a dent.

Racing and flashy arcade titles are the worst offenders. High frame rates, bright effects, and constant screen motion all pile up. If you love the genre, dig into the settings and cap the frame rate or drop effects quality. It makes a real difference.

Casual games sit in the middle, and it depends entirely on how bright and animated they are. The trick with all of them is the same boring advice that actually works: lower your screen brightness, close background apps, and don't play plugged-in games while charging if you can help it.
